FoS TF Writing Group workshop
- Date: Thursday 1 December 2011
- Time: 1:00-5:00pm
- Venue: Sir James Foots building 47A-250
The aim of the Faculty of Science Teaching Focus Writing Group is to create the time and space once a month to enable you to focus on writing up your T&L project outcomes for publication. An outcome of the writing retreat held recently was that participants felt that it was beneficial to work alongside others who were writing SoTL publications, particularly because this is a new discipline for many to publish in.
We invite you to drop into the first Writing Group Session on Thursday Dec 1st between 1-5pm and stay as long as you would like. We have booked a room with PCs and large tables so you can either work on your paper individually or have a conversation around any hurdles you are facing in translating your results into a paper. If you are unable to join us, please advise if you would like to be retained on the mailing list for notification of future sessions in 2012. We intend to develop a calendar of future sessions on Thursday so that you can block your writing time into your schedule.

The Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) model of teaching actively engages students in the learning process by having them solve carefully structured problems in small groups under the direction of a trained peer leader. Peer-led workshops are an effective way to engage large numbers of students with course material and each other. Improved performance and retention, development of communication and team skills, higher motivation and course satisfaction, and increased interest in pursuing further study in science are among the benefits of the PLTL approach. This presentation will introduce the theoretical and practical elements of the PLTL model and describe how technology can be used to promote cyber learning through PLTL. Cyber PLTL (cPLTL) is an online, synchronous, collaborative environment for conducting PLTL workshops. The effectiveness of cPLTL in duplicating the proven benefits of the traditional (face-to-face) PLTL method will be described and preliminary results will be presented.

Lydia Kavanagh has compiled a brief (2 minute max) survey that will allow the workshops to be tailored to achieve the best possible outcomes: workshops that provide career development opportunities at all staff levels, and the incorporation/ implementation of best practice teaching and high quality programs.
Lydia has requested that intending attendees please complete the survey by Friday 21st October. Results will be sent to Richard and Rebecca so that they can judge where to pitch each workshop and what to include.
