Summer vacation projects are a unique opportunity to gain valuable research experience during the summer semester through a formal enrolled course or an informal internship. You will spend up to 8 weeks working alongside researchers with international reputations in their discipline. You must find your own supervisor to be eligible to undertake a project.

UQ Summer Research Scholarships

The University of Queensland is offering scholarships of $300 per week to successful applicants undertaking a summer project. Further details and the application form are available here.

Regardless of your success in the scholarship program, you may still enrol in the course SCIE3044 to conduct a project for credit towards your program.

SCIE3044 Vacation Project

SCIE3044 is a #2 research project course undertaken during the Summer Semester. All students who wish to participate in SCIE3044 must find a supervisor and submit the Application Form to the School of Biomedical Science in Building 65 (Skerman). If you are interested in working outside UQ you must to contact the Course Coordinator for advice.

Students who are NOT currently enrolled at UQ must be eligible for either Cross Institutional Study or must enroll as a Short Term Study Student (Non Award Enrolment). Please contact the Faculty of Science for further information. Email:  science.enquiries@uq.edu.au or Phone: 3365 1888

Your options are:

  • Apply for a UQ Summer Research Scholarship and enrol in the course SCIE3044 Vacation Project  or another project course for credit towards your program, or
  • Apply for a UQ Summer Research Scholarship ONLY to undertake a project on a more informal basis without enrolling in a course for credit, or
  • Apply to enrol in SCIE3044 Vacation Project for #2 credit towards a program.

Who is eligible?

Students currently enrolled in a second or third level of their program at UQ OR outside UQ (ie at another university) are eligible. Students who have already graduated will need to contact the Course Coordinator (see below).

Application Process

1. Select a potential project and a supervisor. View a list of possible projects here. This list is updated regularly so keep checking for a project.

2. Contact several potential supervisors directly and mutually agree on a project.

3. Ask your confirmed supervisor to complete the relevant section of the application forms:

4. Submit applications to relevant area by 5pm, Monday 12 October, 2009.

*NB: No late applications for scholarships will be considered. Late applications for SCIE3044 will be accepted until 27 November.

Your summer vacation project can be completed with a researcher at UQ, one of its collaborative institutions or outside of UQ. You are encouraged to find your own supervisor by approaching researchers in your area of interest. If you are interested in working outside UQ you must to contact the Course Coordinator for advice.
