Elsie Cheong, was recently selected from 334 graduating students as The University of Queensland’s (UQ) valedictorian at the 2013 mid-year Graduation Ceremony, in Brisbane, Australia.

Her selection to undertake the important role of representing all graduating Agricultural, Animal and Environmental Science students was due to her exceptional grades and her excellent speaking ability.

Ms Cheong said she felt very honoured to be selected and was excited to deliver the valedictory address.

At the ceremony, Ms Cheong graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science with Honours in Food Science and Nutrition having studied at UQ for two years.

Ms Cheong enjoyed the stimulating environment and completed her Bachelor program in just two years after receving credit from her Temasek Polytechnic Diploma.

She found the courses challenging, but was able to adapt quickly to the new learning environment.

“Luckily, the academic staff were very helpful when I had questions or doubts, and I felt comfortable approaching them for support,” Ms Cheong said.

During her studies, Ms Cheong was recognised for her academic achievements and was awarded the 2012 Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland Prize and a Dean’s Commendation for High Achievement.

Ms Cheong said it would be difficult to say goodbye to Brisbane when she returned to Singapore to commence a 3-year teaching contract with the Ministry of Education as a secondary food science and nutrition teacher.

“After an initial settling-in period, Brisbane has truly become a home away from home for me,” Ms Cheong said.

“People were very welcoming and friendly, and I was delighted to find so many international students and Singaporeans at UQ.”

“The lifestyle in Brisbane is relaxed and I will miss my long walks by the Brisbane River, Saturday morning brunches with friends and grocery shopping at the West End markets.”
