The University of Queensland's Gatton campus recently hosted the annual UQ Gatton Diversity Dinner in celebration of cultural diversity and inclusivity.

Under the guidance of Academic International Student Mentor, Dr Swaid Abdullah, the event was coordinated through a collaborative effort with several UQ entities.

“The School of Veterinary Science and School of Agriculture and Food Sustainably worked closely with Science Student Experience, UQU International Collective, and Gatton International Student Association to organise this dinner,” Dr Abdullah said.

“This event reinforces UQ’s commitment to fostering an environment of cultural appreciation and acceptance.”

The evening commenced with a welcome from SVS Head of School, Professor Nigel Perkins, setting the tone for a diverse spread of meals.

Over 150 students were in attendance and were treated to a smorgasbord of Indian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Malaysian, Mexican, Middle Eastern, and Italian cuisine, all prepared by local restaurants from Plainlands and Toowoomba.

The finishing touch was a batch of Aussie lamingtons.

Students also participated in karaoke and enjoyed music from different cultures as part of the entertainment.

“There was truly something for everyone, and an opportunity to learn more about the broad array of cultures and experiences here at UQ Gatton campus,” Dr Abdullah said.

“The whole event was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by the students.”

The team would like to extend its thanks to several people who made the event a success.

“Specifically, we’d like to thank Professor Joerg Henning, Associate Professor Ben Wood, Dr Dan Schull and Dr Allison Stewart for their unwavering support and presence at the event,” Dr Abdullah said.

“We’d also like to thank Edelia Sanchez from the Science Student Experience team, and the dedicated student representatives of Gatton International Student Association and UQU International Collective.

“Their meticulous planning and execution ensured the event was a resounding success.

“This event helps establish an environment where diverse perspectives thrive, individuals are empowered, and communities flourish.”

Financial support for the event was provided by SVS, AGFS, Science Student Experience, and UQU International Collective.
